Man, I've always hoped that Sonic Team can make another good Sonic game to let those haters shut their mouths. But Forces just doesn't seem to be the game.

It's strange. I don't even know whether the game is good or bad anymore.

I really feel like Sonic Team isn't the right group to be making Sonic games anymore. After 2006, they took a massive hit in quality and never fully got back up. I really hate how characters besides Sonic tend to get ignored, cutscenes are boring, and how every game these days has to have more reused content than new content. Also the boost formula feels a bit too much "hold a button and go in a straight line" for my tastes, or at least that's how I see it.

Sonic Mania showed me that since it was so easy to have Tails and Knuckles be playable, have actually entertaining cutscenes, level design that requires actual effort to complete, and how Sonic Team forced them to reuse content as opposed to fully new levels like originally intended, someone else should be making the games from now on. Now all we need is a Sonic Adventure-equivalent of Mania...

Now here's a thing: I like modern Sonic and his boost. Lots of people refer to modern Sonic as “boost-to-win”, but I totally disagree with that. I once was really bad at boosting when I first play Sonic Rush Adventure, since that's the first Sonic game with boost that I've played. I often find myself running out of boost gauge when I spam the boost, and later I discover that you actually have to use boost a little bit more wisely to keep the overall speed. Unleashed introduced boost to 3D Sonic, and that game actually showed how hard the stage can be even if you have a boost that allows you to go at super sonic speed and can smash anything in front of you. There are still lots of obstacles that requires you to stay focused, or else you'll find yourself constantly getting blocked or hurt. Same goes to Generations, although it's way easier compared to Unleashed. And Colors doesn't even give you that much boost in certain levels, so you gotta use the boost even more wisely. To me, Unleashed, Colors and Generations are all good games. There sure are people that don't really like modern Sonic gameplay, but you can't ignore the fact that there are also many people that like it. You can't say the modern Sonic games lack quality just because some people don't like the boost gameplay.

Ok yea, I suppose it's more like they took a hit in the qualities that I liked about past games, but I still don't like the boost games. And I really hate it when you can smash through pretty much everything with an action in your default moveset cause it takes the satisfaction of destroying enemies away knowing that they are pretty much useless, especially since there is pretty much no reason not to boost most of the time (I've found that running on foot is more effective at keeping speed than spin dashing).

I don't think you can fully regard boostu.g as a default moveset action. You can jump any time. You can spin dash with classic Sonic any time. But you can't boost any time since you can't do it when you have nothing in your boost gauge. And that's the point, in order to keep boosting, you need to earn enough boost gauge to boost consistently. It's not just about boosting. It's also about earning boost. And in order to do that, you must play it well rather than spamming the boost.

It's just a personal preference of mine that's a bit hard to explain. I'd much rather not be able to plow through enemies unless I have a special powerup or it's a scripted event. Being able to do destroy everything with ease using an ability you have from the start that isn't limited to certain levels is a big no-no for me.

I know people prefer different things, but I still think you don't know what exactly you're doing when playing a modern Sonic game.

I understand why people like the boost games, it just hits a lot of personal pet peeves. If you weren't able to plow through enemies, the gameplay was fully-3D instead of trying to mix in 2D, and it didn't feel too much like I was running in a straight line during the stages, I would be singing a different tune, but as is, I would much rather play an Adventure-style 3D Sonic game. Also, I feel like I'm more critical of boosting because it basically took over 3D Sonic as opposed to having a branch of boost games and a branch of Adventure-style games like I would have preferred. Yea, it's probably stupid of me, but I really can't help it.

Yeah... to tell you the truth, ever since Roger Craig Smith came in, I feel like I've been losing my speed for the Sonic Series.

Personally, I don't think Roger Craig Smith is bad. And tbh my all-time favourite Sonic game is still Sonic Generations, in which Roger voices Sonic and I think its totally fine. I care more about the gameplay when it comes to a Sonic game, since most problems of Sonic series comes from that aspect. And from what we've seen, Forces' gameplay isn't as good as expected. But that doesn't have anything to do with the voice actors.

Or maybe you're just simply talking about the games after Free Riders?
